Nobody puts Baby in a corner!

If you are a fan of the 1987 Dirty Dancing movie starring the late Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, then this is one Broadway musical you shouldn’t miss!

I was fortunate enough to go check out Dirty Dancing the Broadway Musical for its opening night on Sunday evening in El Paso and it was just like the movie, everything from the dancing to the music and of course the beloved characters of Johnny Castle and Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman.

The Music

Just as in the movie, the musical packs in as much music that was featured in the movie including Do You Love Me?, (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life, Hungry Eyes and She’s Like The Wind.

The Dancing

Talk about impressive, these dancers are incredible in their own right, especially Anais Blake who portrays the character of Penny Johnson. Her graceful and flawless dancing reminded me of the late actress and dancer, Vera-Ellen; super talented. But of course the best dance moment happens at the end when Johnny and Baby finally complete their dance routine, lift and all!

The Characters

Every character held their own but there was no denying that my favorite character of the evening aside from Johnny Castle and Baby had to be the sister Lisa, who nailed her role being as whiny and bratty as you may remember from the movie, including her funny scene where she sings Hula Hana.

The Chemistry

Johnny Castle and Baby’s chemistry was spot on. From their initial meeting to dancing together and even the love scenes were fantastic.

The Wardrobe

Just as in the movie, the cast was dressed in some awesome throwback ‘60s garb. Everything from the Bermuda shorts, white jeans, summer dresses and the unforgettable white Keds which all of a sudden has inspired me to get a pair of my own for the summer.

The Watermelons

Yes, the watermelon scene does makes the Broadway musical version and they were in fact real.

Don’t miss Dirty Dancing The Musical for its last night in El Paso at the Plaza Theatre this evening, Monday - March 12, 2018 beginning at 7:30 p.m., we promise you’ll have the time of your life!
