Here's a list of the five best pies to accompany your holiday meal this Thanksgiving.

No Thanksgiving meal seems to be complete without a slice of your favorite pie topped with either whipped cream, ice cream, or whatever your taste buds desire.

I’ve compiled a list of the most popular pies for Thanksgiving and a bonus addition of one of my favorite pies which unfortunately is most difficult to find in El Paso.

Pumpkin Pie

The perfect pairing after any Thanksgiving meal usually ends with a slice of pumpkin pie. You can choose from a crust-less pumpkin pie to one topped with whipped cream, whatever you pick, pumpkin pie is always the number one pie chosen during the Thanksgiving holiday. While homemade is best you can find pumpkins pies pretty much anywhere including Costco where you’ll find a huge pie for under $6.

Sweet Potato Pie

Not quite pumpkin pie – sweet potato pie is a close second as a popular choice for Thanksgiving and it’s usually topped with marshmallow or served plain. You can find a stellar sweet potato pie at Walmart – Patti LaBelle’s Sweet Potato Pie for under $3, seriously $3 – that’s it!

Apple

'American as apple pie' – that’s the saying and we couldn’t agree more. Apple pie is by far the safest pie you can take anywhere and everyone will join you for a slice. You can eat it as is, warm it up, a la mode, whipped cream or if you feel daring top it with a slice of melted cheddar or gruyere cheese, seriously it’s so very good. Village Inn not only offers a delish apple pie they also make a killer sugar free version too.

Cherry

The sweet and tart combination is what makes this pie stand out as well as a good crust. It also depends on the cherries used for the filling – sweet cherries make for a sweet cherry pie or tart cherries for a sour cherry pie, either one will depend on what you prefer. Village Inn also offers a dang good cherry pie if you’re interested in taking one home.

Pecan Pie

I’ll admit this is not my favorite pie but it’s just as popular as any other pie on this list. Pecan pie is a sweet nutty pie that's a true Southern staple and if you are all about making a true pecan pie from scratch you may consider going local and getting your pecans fresh off the farm at Ramirez Pecan Farm.

Rhubarb Pie

I added this pie only because it’s my favorite, although loaded with sugar to offset the tartness of the rhubarb, when made right it’s simply divine. Unfortunately this is not an easy pie to find in El Paso so I’ll continue my search or I might just break down and order one online to satiate my craving – I’ll keep you posted.
