Sure, you can spend a few bucks on a card and flowers for Mother’s Day and make your mom feel like the special lady she is. I’m sure she’d like that. Or you could spend some quality time with her. I bet she'd like that more. Here are a few places around El Paso you can take mom to this weekend that are fun and mostly-free.

    Alfresco! Fridays

Take her to the free outdoor music series and let her unwind and boogie down to Fungi Mungle, El Paso's favorite funk band. Be sure you spring for a cold beverage or two, big spender -- after all, it’s all about her. The music starts at 6 p.m. downtown in the Convention Center Plaza. [More Info]

    Farmers Market

Have mom gather up a few of her reusable tote bags (or Big 8 plastic bags -- we're not judging.), and accompany her to one of the three area farmers markets. The Farmers Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing and the Downtown Artist and Farmers Market are open Saturday morning, while the La Vina Farmers and Crafters Market is open Sunday morning. All three offer mom the opportunity to shop for farm fresh, local produce, fresh baked breads, locally made cheeses, and original arts and crafts – which you're paying for, of course.

    Juan Gabriel Tribute Concert

Pack a picnic, a blanket and some chairs, and hang outdoors with mom, the family, and friends Sunday evening at Eastwood Park (Album Park). The city is throwing a free Mother’s Day Concert featuring well-known Juan Gabriel tribute artist Hugo Cortes from 7 to 9 p.m. Entertainment begins at 5 p.m.

    Wine Tasting

Spend a chill Sunday afternoon with the woman who gave you life at Zin Valle Vineyards, El Paso’s only vineyard and winery. They'll have free wine tasting beginning at noon, and free entertainment by guitarist and singer Julio Ortiz from 1:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. Mom can unwind on the patio, or pack her a picnic and let her relax on the lawn while she takes in the sights of the vineyard and the Franklin mountains just beyond. Mariachis for Momma

If your mom would love nothing more than to hear the traditional sounds of mariachis on Mother’s Day, take her to Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. No less than three mariachi groups will perform beginning at 2 p.m. Since the entertainment and admission is FREE, be sure you throw some 20's her way so she can play the slots, you high roller.
